The meaning of the word 'church' in the Bible refers to the gathering of Christians in a particular area or community. The term church (Original Greek: ekklesia) points to a collection of people who follow Jesus Christ. While there is nothing wrong with a church owning property, it has nothing to do with a structure or building of any kind. It is talking about people, and the idea of church defined as a non-living thing such as a building would have been absurd to the early New Testament writers. Meeting in the setting of house churches was the most common practice of the early church, but this also doesn’t mean that assemblies that take place in other settings outside of the home are somehow bad. Such a claim would be equally absurd. Whether a church meets in a cathedral, a storefront, a theater, or a living room, what makes a church legitimate is that Jesus Christ is present and has priority in the life of that group of believers. In Bronx Fellowship of Christ we simply recognize and value the strengths that are connected with meeting in small groups. |

Bronx Fellowship of Christ is a church being developed in the Bronx as a church for those without a church. We encourage open inquiry and questions regarding our faith. Such questions are welcome. We want people to feel at home among us as they explore matters of faith. At the same time, however, we as a community are nourished by the basic teachings about God, humanity, salvation, and the Bible that have been held in common by Christians throughout the ages. We understand that there have always been variations in expression and practice, but we stand in the broad community of believers throughout the ages who have testified to their faith in Jesus Christ. |

Honoring God by bringing people together and discovering the love of Christ.Do you want God without all the religion? So do we. That is why we follow Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to establish a new religion. He really didn’t! Jesus came to lead us to God. He came to show us true reality. When He initiated His first community of followers, Jesus taught them to imitate Him. Today, the participants in Bronx Fellowship strive to do the same. While we honor and learn from the many Christian traditions that have existed throughout the history of Christianity, we ultimately allow the Bible to have authority that shapes our ministry rather than simply following religious traditions or common assumptions. Like those first followers of Jesus, our lives are being transformed. If one encounters Bronx Fellowship, they will find ordinary people seeking after God. Some are just beginning to learn about His love and mercy. Others have followed Jesus for many years. Still others are in a process of returning to their relationship with the God they once knew. No matter where they’re at, everyone continues to learn. |
